Information for travelling between Europe and the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is no longer part of the European Union. This changes some rules. You can find out what this means for your trip to the United Kingdom in 2021 at www.rijksoverheid.nl/brexit.

Will Brexit affect my booking?

Brexit will not affect your booking with Stena Line, although some travel requirements for your trip may change dependent on the outcome. Latest information can be found here on how to prepare and what steps you may need to take. On the websites below you will find the most recent information about the necessary preparations and which steps you may need to take.

Before you travel, check the following:

Do you have a valid passport or ID card?
Do you have a travel insurance that covers healthcare?
Do you have the correct documents and insurance for your vehicle?
Do you want to travel with your pet? Then you must contact a vet in time!

Will I still be able to sail to the United Kingdom?

Brexit will not affect the ability of Stena Line ferries to sail between the EU and United Kingdom. Passengers travelling via Stena Line ferries to United Kingdom should be able to continue to sail on their booked ferry services, as well as book new crossings to United Kingdom with confidence.

This will remain the case although some of the requirements for travel can change.

Will I be able to change or cancel my booking post Brexit?

Customers who may wish to change or cancel bookings post Brexit are advised to book a Flexi ticket which provides more flexibility than standard Economy tickets. For more information on the various ticket options see Economy, Flexi and Premium products

Will I need a visa to travel to the United Kingdom post Brexit?
No, not if you hold a passport from an EU member state. On GOV.uk you can obtain general information on passports before your journey.

Will I still be able to take my pet on holiday with me after Brexit?

Yes. You will still be able to travel with your pet (dog, cat or ferret) between the United Kingdom and the EU. A maximum of 5 pets is allowed.

Will my European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) still be valid?

UK citizens sailing to continental EU
The EHIC health insurance card will continue to be valid for emergency medical care in an EU country until its expiry date. After that the UK government says a new card will be issued.

We would always advise individuals travelling abroad to ensure they have adequate private travel insurance, as the EHIC scheme does not cover all medical treatment and associated costs.

Your EHIC health insurance card is no longer valid. We advise you to get a travel insurance with adequate medical coverage.

How will commercial goods vehicles be affected?

Any customer travelling carrying commercial goods must contact Stena Line Freight Department in advance (The Netherland: +31 (0)174 - 315 858 / United Kingdom: 0845 - 0704000) as it is their responsibility to book through the correct Stena Line Department and make the necessary customs declarations. If you do not have the necessary declarations, we will not be able to check-in at your port of departure. Also, Stena Line reserves the right to return any passengers to their port of departure (at the passengers’ expense) if they are turned away by Customs at the port of arrival for non-compliance.

Are there additional costs for data roaming?

When roaming charges are introduced, mobile operators in the EU are obliged to inform their customers of any roaming charges they incur when travelling to the United Kingdom. Before you travel, check the latest information about data roaming with your mobile provider.

Duty free shopping

From January 2021, when travelling between the EU and the United Kingdom, you can enjoy duty-free and tax-free shopping on board our ferries.

What can I bring in my luggage?

When travelling between the United Kingdom and the EU there are restrictions on what you can bring with you. There are new rules for vegetables, fruit, plants and plant based products, animals and animal based products, moving stuff, art and cultural goods f.e.
